One day, earlier this year, Mr six and I went out for a drive. We were discussing where we should go on holiday this summer when my phone rang and it was my closest friend asking if we fancied going camping with her family.
As we were talking, the idea grew. And we invited several of our friends to join us.
So one beautifully sunny weekend in August we all made our way to Wicksteed Park in Kettering. Mr six had made a play list of songs that we love, starting with The Mock Turtles (as it was the first gig we went to together waaaaay back in 1990) and ending with the Nick Drake track that I walked down the aisle to (he’s so lush!) and we wore the t-shirts that he and Munchkin made together.
We only had Munchkin with us as our older boys had plans but he wasn’t alone as our friends have children too – two sets of 6 year old twins, two babies, a toddler and my 6 year old godson! We set up camp in the glorious sunshine. The campsite was incredibly busy but we managed to pitch the tents together, in a very loose circle, meaning that the children could play safely and we could see them at all times. The only drawback was that we were SO far from the toilet block (and the sheer number of people on site meant that the toilets weren’t that great).
Dinner was a very laid back affair with each family cooking their own food at a time that suited them. The children were fabulous and went to bed without too much hassle. The same couldn’t be said for the adults…
The wine flowed and the laughter ensued. Then the games came out and the laughter escalated.
The children were all wonderful and we all managed a reasonable night’s sleep, waking around 6am. Breakfast was consumed and we got ready for a day in the park.
Wicksteed is beautiful and there’s something for everyone. The
dads children were eager to try out some of the rides – even Munchkin who was recovering from blood poisoning after particularly nasty chicken pox. Mr six took Munchkin on a few rides
and then we went on the log flume. Cue THE most hilarious photo you have ever seen.
Just look at his face!
The HEAVY rain that was forecast arrived but that didn’t dampen our spirits. We stayed in the park, taking in the indoor play area before heading back to the camp site.
When we left for home, we had a car full of wet clothes and a drenched tent but it really was yet another fabulous weekend with the best people!
